Little things that won’t get you hired or even called in for an interview

by adowling on April 21, 2009

1. Putting me on hold during our first initial phone screening for more than a minute
2. Hanging up on me
3. Calling me every 15 minutes but not leaving a message – caller id idiot
4. Typing your resume in ALL CAPS AND IN BOLD or in off the wall fonts. There are countless tools out there to help you create a professional resume. If I have to reformat your resume in order to read it, that’s three minutes I’ll never get back.
5. When I ask you to tell me about your work experience at XYZ Company and you respond with “I was a Customer Service Rep.” I want to know what you actually did, I can read your resume.
6. Resumes with misspellings and/or grammar issues. I’m not the best speller or claim to have a firm grasp on the English Grammar but come on people, even I know saying “love to be challenge everyday to exceed in whatever the task may be” is bad grammar.
7. When applying online and the application states “by selecting yes you guarantee all the above information to be true and accurate” and you select no…well, you know……

April,

This is great advice. The most seemingly-minor details *do* matter; particularly in this hyper-competitive job market. When you’re competing against hundreds of other candidates for the same job the last thing you want is to be ruled out for something that could have been so easily avoided.
