Charitable giving advice – I needs it

1 CharityMy company has asked me to take on the community service project, for the entire company. For some reason, I agreed; I know….crazy right? At first I was a little over ambitious and had this well thought out project plan with a nice table of contents that involved almost everyone in the company. It was based on the Home Depot “Team Depot” concept. My boss got a copy and said I was nuts, true but I was secretly glad, way too much for one person to take on (shh, don’t tell her).

The plan now is to find a national charitable organization that each center can partner with locally. I’m reaching out to my fellow HR peeps in hopes of getting feedback on your experiences. The initial recommendation was United Way but many have had bad experiences with them. The program is not going to be shoved down the employees throats, I promise; this is going to be a volunteer only program chaired by yours truly (can someone send me a case of Captain Morgan). Have your worked with nationwide charitable organizations and if so, what worked within your company, were your employee open to participating?

Having worked for several national organizations, we chose to let each organization partner with charities in their areas that addressed the needs of their specific communities. That being said, many chose national organizations such as Susan G. Komen. We encouraged each facility to go beyond a charity jeans day and to be creative and get hands on, we then profiled the most creative efforts. HQ went with Harvest for Hunger. We gave 4 hours of PTO for people that would work a 4 hour shift packing food, we had a penny war (yes that was years of change that crushed you 6th floor denizens!) and partnered with a comedy club I was performing at to collect food at the door in exchange for discounted admission.
