Alabama State SHRM Conference

by adowling on May 20, 2009

I had a great time at the Alabama State SHRM Conference today. I had the opportunity to meet, face to face, a few great Tweeters; Sharlyn Lauby (HR Bartender), Ben Eubanks, and Kevin Lane. I also ran into a few local BSHRM members that are always nice. Lots of local vendors and some great swag as well.

We had the privilege of hearing an EEOC Commissioner speak regarding her thoughts on EEOC and HR. She had an interesting story about an organization that isn’t up to date on the women’s movement; they told one female candidate they used mud wrestling to pick female employees. An interesting statistic, the EEOC only filed a suit against ~300 of its 20,000+ complaints last year. Carrie Schwab Pomerantz, daughter of Charles Schwab, was also a presenter on financial literacy in the workplace. During the afternoon break we were treated with a choice of three desserts to lead us into the last session which covered legal updates.

The conference was well worth the price even all you did was network. If you are in Alabama I highly recommend you attend the conference next year.
