I love to see businesses taking full advantage of the social media tools available to them, free tools at that.
With that said, my own company does not have a presence in social media; I’m still trying to figure out how to approach it. We don’t have a typical customer base; think of us like collectors, our customers are our clients. I can see us with a Facebook page similar to Jessica Lee’s APCOWorldwide site. We are just cleared 1000 employees last month so we are now a large company; yea us!
On the flip side, I received a Facebook invite the other day to be a fan of a local small company. This company employees under 10 people and has been open less than a year. In the time it’s been open, the owner has expanded the product line and is moving beyond the seasonal product, snow cones, they sold at inception.
How is the owner communicating the changes in the company? Facebook. This small company is moving into Social Media and marketing its products via Facebook. I thought it was very cool. The owner offers coupons to the Facebook friends and advertises upcoming products for the winter. So far the company is up to 49 friends, self included.
In addition to marketing its product, the Facebook page shows the fun behind the scenes. There are pictures of the employees obviously having fun. Fun at work, teenagers at that!
This post is dedicated to Sno Daze in Hueytown Alabama. The owner of Sno Daze is my mom but her success has had nothing to do with having a daughter in HR that loves Social Media. My mom has good business sense and she knows an opportunity when she sees it even if that opportunity is really just her having fun. If you’re in central Alabama, go visit Sno Daze in Hueytown; tell them Bobbie’s daughter sent you.

Good grief, Hueytown. Haven’t been there in years. But I have a sister in Tarrant, so I’ll send her, with her girls. They love sno cones!
@tlcolson – hahaha, does it bring back memories
Send her down, mom loves children. Well, specifically she loves them because she wants grandchildren. I keep telling her she has a four legged furry grand daughter but apparently the cat isnt good enough.
Interesting post! I am also in the process of thinking how to create a fb page for my company. It’s really cool and inspiring to hear stories about small businesses making the best use out of social media. Hopefully, our company will get the same results. Oh, and if I’m ever in Alabama, I’ll make sure to check out Sno Daze!
