Jumping in January

Blue Monday - Are you feeling it?

HRFishbowl wants you to #ShutupforHaiti, so I’m shutting up.  Rather than complaining about Blue Monday, let me tell you what we are doing in my office today.

Jumping in January. It has nothing, absolutely nothing to do with business. Zero. There’s no goal to jump for or strive to make; none of that usual motivational crap. The idea behind the game is to break up the monotony of the day and give the staff something to talk about besides the depressing event going on in the world.

Here’s how it works.

We divided our office into teams.  Each team comes up with a name. My team is The Ninjas, surprising right. One area of the office is taped off for measurement.  Then each person from each team either takes a flatfooted jump down the tape line or takes a large step/leap.  Each jump is measured and the two employees on each team that jump the farthest are the Jumpers for each team.

Each team then competes and the smack talk is plentiful. The teams are bracketed, NBA playoff style.  The jumping lasts the entire month of January.  The winning team gets lunch with and paid for by the Center Director.

That’s it.  That simple little game has caused a buzz around my office. Employees can’t wait until the end of the day on Monday and  Friday for the Jump off.  They are working harder to make the day pass by quicker so they can jump or practice or watch me jump and bust my butt on the floor.  Good Times.

Let’s talk about the good stuff.  What is happening around your office that’s brightening the day?

That made me chuckle. I have these images of jumping colleagues now!

love this. i wish we all played more at work. there’s a reason we had recess for at least 12 years of our lives. this one sounds like a good one for adults too. thanks for the suggestion, oh Minister of Fun. And thanks also for your support for #ShutUpForHaiti.

@TheHRD Oh its a site to see. We have one employees that’s under five feet tall and just as thin. That woman jumps like you wouldnt believe!

@Charlie Glad to help! It’s a great initiative anyway, we could all use to be a little more upbeat. We like to have fun in my office, it makes coming to work not so bad.

Sounds like a pretty sweet game! Gen Y has this one in the bag. :-) The non-work parts of work are usually the best!

Well since I work with a bunch of techies all day, our fun consists of sending URLs of weird tech stuff to each other all day. Maybe we need to go on a road trip to your office to “learn” how to have fun away from the keyboards.

@Ben – It really is a lot of fun.

@Michael – That sounds like good time too! Send some of those my way! Anytime you want to take a cross country road trip and come down here, we can teach all kinds of fun non-keyboard related games.
