An apology just doesn’t cut it

by adowling on February 16, 2010

A slap on the wrist and a request for an apology for Reindeer Games; really?

Get real.

I really enjoyed the first episode of Undercover Boss but the episode that aired Sunday night was joke.  You’re telling me that a CEO sees a manager blatantly playing a sexist ‘game’ with his staff and he just stands there afraid to break character?  I. Don’t. Buy. It.

I want to see the apology.  Oh to be a fly on the wall during the conversation Jimbo’s direct manager has with him.  And where is HR during all of this?

I want to call Jimbo an idiot but I don’t know him personally so I’m going to stick with calling his management style, or lack thereof, idiotic.

Did you watch Undercover Boss Sunday night? Is my need for Girl Power making me madder at Jimbo than I should be?

I’m so right there with you, sister! It made me so mad that I blogged about it Sunday night right after I watched it. It even came up in casual conversation with my staff about it on Monday morning and we were all appalled.

We need more Girl Power, so keep on rocking it!

ah I agree. An apology was not enough and I really doubt that his management style has changed. It seems like he has been working there for awhile and for him to just all of a sudden change? I don’t think so…
Also, the CEO from Hooter sucks. He has bad management style and I don’t think a campaign is going to change my mind about what Hooter represents. As that one lady said…Hooter exploits women.

I am not an HR person. I’m a compliance person. I spend my day looking at black and white (follows the rules, doesn’t follow he rules). Jimbo, clearly doesn’t follow the rules. To say his management style is idiotic, is putting it nicely. I saw that and thought, I bet if you audit his restaurant, you’ll find a slew of problems from his blatant disregard for rules/regulations. In compliance, we learn, those who bend the rules in one area, undoubtedly bend them in others. We also deal in risk assessment. If he’s willing to bend HR policy to his delight, who’s to say he isn’t bending food regulation requirements fo his benefit. A wayward manager is not a cheap risk to take. If I was that CEO, I’d require his employment be terminated immediately. IMHO

Let me be the first male to comment on this…I would have fired the guy on the spot (barring any info crucial to the decision unknown, spoken like a true HR nerd). Not only was he exposing his organization to many complaints by several agencies, both in the area of HR and health, he was treating people like crap. That in the long run is probably more dangerous to the overall performance of his people. I didn’t see the whole episode but that were my impressions from what I saw.

And I agree with thuy, that CEO is not someone to hold up as an example of a great leader. I might be tempted to use him as an example of a CEO that got his job by who his father was, not by what he accomplished.

Good post April

I saw the commercial and knew this show is fake— and I don’t watch crap TV either.

Hooters has great buffalo wings, tho!!

That was my reaction as well – why didn’t he just step in and stop it. If it were a safety issue, he would have been considered neglectful.
But, in the world of franchises, he may not have had the legal power to do that, strange as it may sound. He could threaten Jimbo’s boss that he would revoke the franchise. Or if it was Jimbo’s revoking it would then make the waitresses victims again.
What bothered me was the note at the end that Jimbo had since changed his behavior. Um, not overnight, and not without considerable supervision and feedback.
